An Edward Stockwell aesthetic silver cream jug

Price: Sold

For sale is this delightful aesthetic period cream jug.  Hallmarked for the renowned maker Edward Stockwell and dated 1879.   The Japanese influence is very clear. The jug decorated with applied foliage and exotic bird in rose and yellow gilt, with bamboo handle.

Whilst the design borrows from Japan it is likely the direct influence for this piece was Tiffany & Co who launched mixed metal pieces using copper and silver of similar design, to great effect, at the 1878 Paris International Exhibition. The jug perfectly captures the global influence of Japan on design at this time via Tiffany in New York, to Paris, to London.  The strict English assay laws made silver and copper pieces very rare in England and so gilding was used to create the similar effect.

A good gauge of silver. This piece is a pair to the larger jug A1332
